Global History of Peru

Host Luka Haeberle discusses modern Peruvian history as well as Peru’s entanglement with the rest of the world. Understandable for those with new-found interest for the subject, but nevertheless exciting for the well-versed listener. For this month's episode I interviewed Professor David Tavárez about his award-winning book Rethinking Zapotec Time: Cosmology, Ritual, and Resistance in Colonial Mexico. This study presents the first full translation and analysis of a series of Zapotec divinatory calendars that were confiscated by colonial authorities at the beginning of the 18th century. We spoke about indigenous theology, the history of the Zapotec languages, and more.

Enjoy it.

For this month's episode I interviewed Professor R. Alan Covey about Inca history and archaeology. We touch on many topics I explained in the previous episode, though this time more extensively. I had a lot of fun with this one (despite having a cold), and I hope you will as well.

Episode 3: The Incas

Sunday Aug 25, 2024

Sunday Aug 25, 2024

Here is the much awaited episode on Inca history!

The Inca empire began to form around 1200 AD and reached its greatest expansion in 1532. By this time, the Inca rulers claimed territories in Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and even Ecuador and Colombia as their own. On this occasion I talked about their socio-political organization, in such a way that the events that occurred after the encounter with the Conquistadors are understandable. I also explained what historical sources we count on and commented on the trends in recent research literature.

Enjoy the episode.

Corrections:
Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa’s book was published in 1572, not in 1568.
When I spoke of the Inca foundational myth, I mistakenly referred to the lake Titicaca region. I meant to say Pacaritambo and Huanacaure. These two archaeological sites are considerably more recent than said narrative’s timeline.

The Spanish empire was not solely built by Castilian and Aragonese people. This doesn't solely apply to the consolidation of royal authority in the Americas, as I explained in our last episode. Genoese merchants and financiers, as well as the republic of Genoa, were key participants in this early modern empire, and the presence of Genoese merchants in the Iberian peninsula even dates back to the Late Middle Ages. So I decided to dedicate an interview to their history. For this episode I interviewed Dr. Richard Ibarra, to whom I'm very thankful. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis on Genoese merchants in Seville and the Spanish Atlantic (1450-1650).
